Africa Day is annual celebration on May 25th for the people of Africa and the African diaspora. It commemorates the founding of the African Union (AU) (the successor of the Organization of African Unity (OAU)) and Africa’s independence, freedom and liberation from colonial rule. Each year features a different theme and the 2025 Theme is especially poignant – “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”. This theme emphasizes the AU’s commitment to addressing historical injustices, including the trans-Atlantic slave trade, colonialism, apartheid, and genocide. Speaking on behalf of the African Union Commission (AUC), the Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf delivered a stirring address on May 24th that reflected on Africa’s historic journey while calling for bold steps toward a just and prosperous future.
