Namibia

Officially the Republic of Namibia, Namibia is country in southern Africa that shares its western border with the Atlantic Ocean, its northern border with Angola and Zambia, its eastern border with Botswana, and its southern and eastern border with South Africa. Namibia’s capital and largest city is Windhoek.

Namibia is home to the Khoisan people, who are descendants of the original inhabitants of Southern Africa. Ancient Khoisan rock art paintings can be seen at Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Himba, another ancient semi-nomadic tribe, is probably the most well-known Namibian ethnic group. Because of the harsh desert climate and their seclusion from outside influences, the Himba have managed to preserve much of their culture and traditional lifestyle. Himba women are known for their use of otjize, a paste of butter, fat and red ochre which they apply to their hair and skin, and which gives their appearance a distinctive red hue.

Namibia is the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa, best known for its spectacular desert landscapes and sunsets. It’s one the few places on earth where the desert meets the ocean. Popular attractions include Fish River Canyon, Etosha National Park, The Namib desert and giant sand dunes, Moon Landscape, Skeleton Coast and the adventure activities of Swakopmund.
